About Us
Marathi Aai Initiative (MAI) is a nonprofit community created by and for Marathi-speaking mothers living outside India, with a primary focus on those residing in North America. We are a vibrant and inclusive community that provides a safe, nurturing space for Marathi moms to connect, share, and support one another as we navigate the unique joys and challenges of parenting away from home.

Grounded in our shared cultural roots, heritage and values, MAI celebrates Marathi traditions, language, and festivals while also fostering friendships and building a sense of belonging in a new land. Whether you're a new mom adjusting to life in North America or a seasoned parent seeking community and a deeper cultural connection, we are here for you - offering friendship, support and a true sense of home - with open hearts and open arms.

Through virtual meetups, cultural events, parenting workshops, and regional chapters, we aim to empower Aais, preserve our cultural identity, and raise our children who are confident and proud of our roots.

Together, we support. Together, we grow. Together, we thrive.

Our Story
Sayli Natu, born and raised in the United States, and Kshitija Karmarkar, born and raised in Pune, India, came from different cultural environments. Yet, they shared a poweful bond : a deep passion for staying connected to their Indian and specifically Marathi heritage, while serving and supporting their broader community.

During her pregnancy and postpartum journey, Sayli often turned to Kshitija—who had recently become a mother—for guidance, reassurance, and emotional support. Through their conversations, they realized: many new Marathi mothers living in North America likely faced similar questions, uncertainties, and a strong desire for cultural connection, yet lacked a centralized, supportive network.
What began as an idea—initially met with some hesitation—soon took shape when Sayli shared her vision of a support group with Kshitija. Kshitija, confident in the potential of the initiative, encouraged moving forward without delay. Together they created the WhatsApp group “Marathi Aai of North America”. At first, the group just had 10–15 close friends. “Even if it's just a few of us,” they thought, “it will still be meaningful and helpful.”

To their surprise and delight, the group quickly grew beyond their expectations. Through word of mouth and a shared need, the community grew rapidly. Today, over 1100 Marathi-speaking mothers from across the United States and Canada are part of the group, with new members joining regularly.
The group’s impact was so profound that it inspired the formation of a parallel community for fathers, which has also flourished.

What began as a simple idea between two mothers has blossomed into a thriving, supportive network that continues to empower, uplift, and connect Marathi families across North America.
Meet the Founders
Dr. Sayli Natu, co-founder of the Marathi Aai Initiative, was born and raised in America but has a deep appreciation and connection to her Maharashtrian roots. After obtaining her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), she also completed an acute care residency. She currently practices at a hospital in the Bay Area. Given her own dual-cultural upbringing, Sayli is passionate about her work within MAI and is equally driven to help the next generation be confident in their skin and proud of their heritage. Sayli is also a trained Kathak dancer but most importantly, is “aai” to a vivacious 2 year old.
